NEW ‘LOCALLY GROWN’ SILVER SPOON PACK FOR TESCO IN EAST ANGLIA
18th Apr 2008
In support of Tesco’s commitment to promote local produce, Silver Spoon is launching an exclusive granulated sugar pack for the East Anglia region. It highlights to customers that Silver Spoon sugar is produced locally, making a short journey from the beet fields of East Anglia, to the British Sugar factory at Bury St Edmunds and on to Tesco stores in the region.
To mark the launch of the new pack on Monday 21st April, customers of the Bury St Edmunds Tesco store will this week be greeted by a sugar beet harvester, owned by local farmer Paul Cornwell. Customers will also have the opportunity to learn more about the journey Silver Spoon sugar takes from field to spoon through displays in-store.
The British Sugar factory at Bury St Edmunds was built in 1925 and has been a long standing part of the community. Steve Williams, British Sugar’s factory manager, commented “An alliance of local farmers, 235 factory employees and distributors work together to supply over 300,000 tonnes of sugar from Bury St. Edmunds each year.”
Richard and Ruth Duchesne are typical of the 1,200 sugar beet farmers who supply the Bury St Edmunds sugar factory with two million tonnes of beet each year. Their farm, Stanningfield Hall, is just south of Bury St. Edmunds in an area where the soil is particularly suited to the sugar beet crop. On average the farmers supplying the Bury St. Edmunds factory are based within 30 miles of the factory.
“We’re delighted to have joined Tesco’s campaign to promote local produce. Silver Spoon, as part of British Sugar, is the only company to produce sugar from sugar beet grown in the UK. We have a long history of association with this region and have worked closely with the local beet farmers for many years to ensure the highest quality sugar is produced. We’re proud of the fact that from field to spoon our sugar travels fewer miles than any other to reach the customer”, said Louise Vickers, Senior Brand Manager for Silver Spoon.
Sam Nundy Senior Buying Manager Tesco says, “I am delighted to be working with Silver Spoon in bringing this exciting new East Anglian Grown sugar pack to our customers. This is an exciting opportunity to work with the region’s growers and really show our support of East Anglian farming.”
